Kamloops located at the junction of the North and South Thompson River
originated as a trading settlement, founded by Alexander Ross of the
Pacific (Astoria) Fur Company, who called it Cumcloups (from an Indian
word meaning "meeting of the waters"). The trading concession was sold in
1821 to the Hudson's Bay Company, which moved its post (Fort Kamloops) in
1862 across the river to what is now North Kamloops.
Growth that began with the gold rush of the late 1850s was sustained with
the arrival of the "overlanders" in 1862 and the railroad in 1885.
Kamloops was incorporated as a city in 1893, and North Kamloops became a
village in 1946 and a town in 1961. The two communities were amalgamated
in 1967 to form the city.

Kamloops is a hub for transportation with both major railways passing
through the City and several major highways passing through the City
including Trans Canada Highway #1 and Yellowhead #5 Highway.

Kamloops has a diversified economy with a base that includes
manufacturing, tourism, forestry, mining, agriculture and service sectors.
The larger employers in the area include Weyerhaeuser Canada, Highland
Valley Copper Mine, Royal Inland Hospital, School District No. 24 and the
University College of the Cariboo.
